A 14 year old wrote this extraordinary poem during her experience of EMDR therapy with me over a 2 year period.
She has generously given me permission to share her poem. She hopes that it would help to encourage other young people in trouble find it easier to try therapy too.
All washed out, misunderstood
A story spun, from bad to good
From cold and lost, only knowing to fight
To angelical verse, brimming with light
Cut by wires so barbed, every twist and turn you make
Dragging yourself through the fire
For every small mistake
Cold, grey, lonely. A storm way out at sea
The hands that tick, causing such agony
Who do you want to be?
Why is my soul so lost and small
As though its barely there at all? Must I drift? For however long
Will no one hear my siren’s song?
Or will the poison taint their ears
The catalyst of all my fears
I envisage the ship, washed up on the rocks
It can’t withstand the blows and knocks.
Or can this tale end, alternatively
Will I end up different, to who I thought I would be?
Light pierces the grey, the heavens shine down
Tears of light wonderment,
Wash away this dark frown
For the sun must arise, from the midst of the night
Into dreamy, pink hues
A depiction of delight
At last it subsides and eternal respite
The waters so calm, shimmering
An embodiment of self
